Leisure Case Study

A new modern gallery development of 1300m2 over four floors adjacent to the existing grade I listed building.

The design incorporated vertically stacked galleries providing all round circulation with education and outreach spaces on the periphery. Other spaces that new building services were installed included the open archive spaces, additional storage areas, café and shop.

With some exposed concrete elements to the building this required coordination of the conduits with the frame contractor to allow new lighting installations to installed along with appropriate fire detection that was symmetrical and would allow for future adaptability to meet new collections. There was an interface with the existing services in the adjoining listed building, but the new building was provided with new standalone systems.

The building comprised new passive and active elements that used the exposed concrete structure to help with modifying the inside environment. A condensing boiler installation served new underfloor heating system allowing all the walls to be used for exhibits by avoiding radiators. The Client carried out a bespoke BREEAM assessment and achieved very good.
