Phil Wins CIBSE South West Student of the Year Award 2025

We are proud to celebrate Phil as the 2025 recipient of the CIBSE South West Student of the Year Award.

Presented annually at the CIBSE South West Annual Dinner, the award recognises the highest performing students in Building Services Engineering and Architecture & Environmental Engineering at the University of the West of England. It celebrates consistent academic excellence, strong engagement with the course, and overall contribution throughout the degree programme.

Recognising Academic Excellence

Phil was nominated by his lecturers at the university based on his consistent academic achievement (first-class performance across modules) and overall contribution and engagement throughout his course. He was confirmed as the 2025 award winner, a fantastic achievement reflecting five years of dedication and hard work.

Balancing Career, Study and Family Life

Phil has recently completed his final year of a degree apprenticeship in Building Services Engineering at UWE and is on track to graduate with First Class Honours.
Throughout the apprenticeship, he balanced full-time employment with significant personal milestones: getting married, buying a home, and becoming a father of two young children, demonstrating remarkable commitment and discipline.

Professionally, Phil has recently transitioned into the role of HVAC Design Estimator within our Retail department, following five years delivering HVAC projects as a Project Manager in the retail sector. His degree apprenticeship has supported his move from project delivery into a more technically focused position.

Looking Ahead

Phil’s long-term ambition is to develop as a technical specialist in HVAC and decarbonisation, while continuing to build leadership and management capability within the building services industry.

Reflecting on his achievement, Phil said:
Completing a degree apprenticeship while working full time has been challenging, particularly alongside family life, but it has been incredibly rewarding. Applying academic learning directly to real projects has accelerated my development and strengthened my confidence as an engineer. I would encourage anyone considering the apprenticeship route to embrace it, as the combination of practical experience and academic study provides a strong foundation for a long-term career in the industry.

This award is a testament not only to Phil’s academic ability, but also to his resilience, professionalism and commitment to continuous development.

Congratulations, Phil, a thoroughly deserved achievement!
