Bristol Old Vic

Leisure Case Study

This major refurbishment programme was the latest since the early 1970’s on the Grade I listed building and only required closure of the theatre for small parts of the construction period.

All the main M&E services were at the end of their economic life and we carried out a replacement of the infrastructure. The auditorium was suffering from poor thermal comfort in both summer and winter as well as the poor thermal conditions in the training and back of house areas.

Following a traditional design solution, we installed new comfort cooling and fresh air ventilation systems throughout the building and working with some of the original build features to create plenums for air distribution and removal from the building. Complete new lighting and control systems were provided along with fire detection and centralised heating and cooling plant all concealed within the building fabric and new services routes.

With the designers having carried out fire risk assessment of the considerable timber frame within the building it was necessary to install as high pressure mist sprinkler system concealed within the existing structure and working with the fire detection system. The result is a hugely successful operating theatre for both the public and the repertoire and travelling productions.
